A few days ago I came across a post on justformetoday.com
about being fat and getting men. I don't think anything has pissed me off so much in a while. The article lists 15 ways to look attractive even, yes, EVEN if you're overweight.
I've already written an article about it for the Uni magazine I write for, but that didn't get to touch on the more extreme aspects of it
article here. I spent a while trying to work out what bothered me most. Firstly I think it was the implication that women needed to have a man to validate them. "yes, you can be fat, but if a man asks you out then it's okay" but there are so many other aspects of the thing that wind me up.
The tips themselves aren't actually exclusive to fat women, apart from the one that tells you to forget your weight. (A thing the article hasn't managed to do.) I find that it really bothers me as I know so many fat women who are also really inspirational, and of course, very very beautiful. Many of them helped me with pictures for the article and are featured in it.
Being angry eventually dissipated and I just felt sorry for the women out there who feel like they aren't beautiful and aren't valid people just because of weight/colour/sexual preference/body hair and all manner of stupid things. I was very glad that I've always had someone supportive in my life.
Here's the ladies in the article. They're lovely and inspiring and beautiful inside and out. Enjoy.
Thank you for featuring me my lovely, and you were valid in your anger. Shame the fat haters came out afterwards, but that isn't the point.
ReplyDeleteThe point is, they read it in the first place!

Thank you for all your help!
ReplyDeleteIt is a shame about the hate, but then again, from the 'up and down thumbs' function it seems like not many people approve of the lone idiots anyway! Perhaps this is some vague form of progress?
