This is a report about a NuMed student at the University I attend. He recorded women in the shower without their knowledge and then used the tapes for sexual gratification.
The article made me feel ill. The general tone seems to imply he's a bit of a cheeky bloke, terms like "peeping Tom" implies he was just a bit of a scamp. It doesn't seem to address the fact he was a sexual predator.
This person sought out women to violate. He specifically looked for women who had no choice in the matter, despite his girlfriend and the plethora of widely available pornography he chose to film women without their knowledge. Pornography can cater to that taste, but clearly he felt the need to violate and objectify women who couldn't and wouldn't give their permission.
The ending of the article knocked me sick too:
"Beverley, who was in the second year of his medical degree at the time, had wanted to become a doctor but has now had to change career paths."
So we should feel sorry for him because he chose to sexually abuse five women, got caught and couldn't continue with his life?
“He is 21-years-old and to say he’s upset is an understatement. It has been a very dark period indeed."
I'm sure it has been for the women he abused.
“His girlfriend has stuck by him, she’s a very decent woman."
She's a decent woman because she tolerates that behaviour? Excellent life lesson there.
“It has been absolutely devastating for him and it’s had a massive impact on his life.”
I can think of some people this might have had more of an impact on.
This kind of behaviour should not be tolerated or excused. It doesn't matter what he WANTED to do with his life, he made a choice, and that choice will follow him. He brought this situation about with his actions. How on earth is this anyone's fault but his?
This reporting knocks me sick. I've written up an Opinion article regarding it, but I doubt they'll ever let me publish it.
Joy.
Anyway, to end on a happy note, here's some nice pictures.
